John W. Minish, 1913

John W. Minish Is Summoned By Death

Last Friday morning at half past three o’clock, occurred the death of Mr. John W. Minish at his country home two miles south of Commerce. A year ago, he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered and since that time, his health had gradually declined. Three weeks ago, he became desperately ill. Finally yielding to the Grim Reaper after every human effort had been made to save his life.

The funeral was held at Apple Valley on Saturday morning at 11 o’clock, Rev. H. E. Hardman conducting the service and his remains were laid to rest with honors by Camp John H. Morgan, U.C.V. of which the deceased was an active and loyal member.

Mr. Minish was 74 years of age. He was born in Jackson county, three miles south of Commerce on the farm known as the Glenn place and his death occurred two miles from the place of his birth. When a young man and the call to arms was echoed through the southland, he responded but on account of his size, being of small stature, he could not meet the physical requirements and was told that he could remain at home. Unlike many men who would have received this news with delight, Mr. Minish appealed to the authorities to let him go to the front that he wanted to serve his beloved southland and his request was granted. He served three years and won the nick name of ” Panther” on account of his grit, determination and endurance.

Mr. Minish was a farmer, a tiller of the soil who raised his supplies at home and in his occupation he was successful. As a citizen he was sturdy, peaceful and a firm believer in upholding and enforcing all laws. He was a Christian man, his church membership being with the Apple Valley Baptist church. He was familiar with the Bible and could quote scripture fluently. As a neighbor, he was considerate and thoughtful and he had scores of warm personal friends who held him in the highest esteem. In his passing away, Jackson county loses a substantial citizen whose death is deplored by those who knew him and appreciated his commendable traits of character.

Besides a host of friends, he is survived by his widow and the following children, all of whom reside in this immediate section: Mrs. J. W. Barnett, Messrs. W.H., C.P., L.G., and B.C. Minish.

Mollie Lee Minish, 1910

In Memoriam
Miss Mollie Lee Minish was born on December 20, 1873, and on the 21st day of January, 1910, God called her spirit to dwell with loved ones in the heavenly mansion.

Sister Minish had been a faithful and consecrated child of God since she was about 14 years old, when she was received into the Apple Valley Baptist church, and was baptized by Rev. W. S. McCarty. She was a devoted sister, obedient daughter, and a woman of the noblest type, being ever faithful to her Christian duty. While it is sad to part with our loved ones, we would not bring them back to this world of trouble it we had that power, but we can prepare to meet them again in heaven. Earth can not be man;s only abiding place. We are born for a higher and more glorious destiny.

We read of a wonderful city, where no cloud or shadow can intervene. Those who gain an entrance to this city shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat, for the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them. And lead them to living fountains of water, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

The redeemed of the Lord shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Whereas, Our beloved sister has taken up her abode in her heavenly home, in accordance with the will of our all wise and omnipotent Creator.

Therefore, Resolved First, That in her departure from us we have lost a faithful and consecrated member, but we feel that our loss is heaven’s gain, and that our sister has joined that grand eternal church above.

Second, That we deeply sympathize with the bereaved family, and that they have our most earnest prayers.

Third, That these resolutions be spread on the church record, sent to the family of the deceased and sent to the county paper for publication.

Edna Thompson O'Shields, 1925

Death of Mrs. Edna O’Shields
The hearts of the people of this city and surrounding section were made sad when the news was spread abroad that Mrs. Edna O’Shields had died at her home a few miles northeast of Winder. She died on last Thursday afternoon. She was the wife of the late John W. Shields, a splendid farmer of this section, and who died from injuries received in a runaway accident a few years ago.

Mrs. O’Shields moved to Winder after the death of her husband, but moved back to her farm several years ago. She has been sick for a few days recently but was thought that she had recovered. She was at home on the day of her death and was preparing to come to Winder with her daughter, Mrs. Allen Carrington, who was to go for her in the afternoon.

When Mrs. Carrington arrived she found her mother lying on the floor in an unconscious condition. She never regained consciousness and died in a few hours after being found.

Mrs. O’Shields leaves five children, Mrs. Allen Carrington, Miss Ruby O’Shields, and John, Paul, and Ralph O’Shields, one brother, Mr. C. M. Thompson and several nephews and nieces.

The funeral services were coducted[sic] at the residence by Rev. W. B. Dillard pastor of the Methodist church Saturday and interment was at the family cemetery on the O’Shields plantation.

The deepest sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the bereaved family.

[According to her death certificate, Edna Thompson O’Shields died 15 Jan 1925 in Barrow County, Georgia. I believe this obituary was published in the Winder newspaper.]

Note: I have several obituaries my grandmother clipped and saved over the years. I don’t know for certain when or where they were published, although some of them were almost certainly from the Atlanta Constitution or the Atlanta Journal, as she lived in Atlanta for most of her adult life. I’ve provided dates from other sources if not included in the obituary.
